On 13 December 2011 the Australian Communications Minister Stephen Conroy gave a speech to the National Press Club, making the case for the NBN, Australia’s government owned high-speed broadband network. This note reviews some of his claims.

Forecasting Australian Bandwidth Demand
Following on from our work for the UK's Broadband Stakeholder Group looking at future demand for bandwidth, we were commissioned by Australia's Department of Communications to undertake a similar forecast for that country.
Our work was a critical input to the a wider, ground-breaking cost-benefit analysis of the different options for Australia's National Broadband Network.
Forecasting domestic UK broadband demand, 2013-2023
Communications Chambers were commissioned by the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG) to develop a model (and summary report) that seeks to forecast UK domestic demand for broadband capacity. As far as we are aware, it is the first such model to be put into the public domain.

FTTP's role in UK connectivity
In this paper for BT, Robert Kenny argues for a targeted approach to the deployment of FTTP in the UK. While FTTP undoubtedly has a role to play - on greenfield sites, for example - there is scant evidence that a 'blunt' deployment of FTTP across the UK will be worthwhile, particularly given the lower cost and rapidly developing capabilities of other technologies.
